Galen Humber (head coach of the sailing school last year) will be the Junior Activity Coordinator (JAC) again for the 2010 sailing season Junior Program. Galen will be returning from his teaching position in Ethiopia near the end of April to commence working at MBYC by May 1, 2010.

The Boat Maintenance Support Person (BMSP) position in the Sailing School is being changed slightly. The position will work with the Junior Activity Coordinator who will have responsibility for overall boat maintenance and repairs during the clubs boating season. The BMSP will also provide emergency and program support to the sailing school. The BMSP position will be a full time training opportunity available to Club juniors who have participated as a volunteer and who demonstrate aptitude and interest in becoming a sailing instructor. More than one person may share the job over the duration of the sailing school.

The Sailing School will offer volunteer opportunities to junior members who are sailing participants wanting to advance their sailing skills and might have an interest in becoming an instructor. A volunteer will learn more about how the sailing school is organized and operated and better understand of the roles, responsibilities and requirements of an instructor while assisting Sailing School Instructors. Those successfully completing 70 hours of volunteer service will be eligible for student aid towards advanced sailing or basic instructor courses.

• Work on hiring instructors and developing the 2010 Sailing School schedule and promotion material is underway and should be available for March.

• The club is researching the feasibility of introducing a CYA MOSS sailing class likely for the 5-7 age group in 2011. Currently the sailing school offers classes for 8+ years of age.

• Together with Cowichan Power and Sail Squadron, MBYC is developing a ‘Boat Driving School’ for this spring. The program combines the material to obtain a PCOC and VHF radio license and both practical and theoretical instruction with on the water operation of a variety of small outboard boats. Suitable for youth and adults who may not have access to a small boat and want to learn how to operate an outboard boat safely.

Youth and adult dinghy sailing and instruction will be offered on weekends and evenings through the spring and summer.
