Lorna D

The Lorna D. was built in Maple Bay by the Davidge family and sailed by them across the South Pacific.  This is the tale of their journey home through the war-torn Pacific of WWII.  The Lorna D. Bowl is a trophy presented annually to the Junior Sportsman of the year.

MBYC was the first Canadian yacht club and the first on the Pacific coast to be granted a Lightning Fleet Charter.  The Lightning class was introduced to MBYC in 1948 by Hunter Vogel.  Several of these class boats were built in the boat yard he established across from the old yacht club (what is now the Rowing Club).  The Vogel family were very keen racers but they did take time to go cruising - a family of 5 in a 19' centre-board sloop.   Cruising In A Day Sailer - Isabel Vogel - SEA Magazine - 1947
